HOW TO PRESERVE THE LIFE OF YOUR FURNITURE
Furniture is an expensive outgoing when starting and running a commercial catering business, so keeping it in top form is crucial to increasing its longevity and saving you money.
CLEANING
If you need to give your furniture a deeper clean to remove stubborn stains and dirt, dilute a light detergent into warm water, and wipe the furniture with a damp cloth. This removes dirt and maintains the finish of the furniture you’re cleaning. Wicker furniture should not be exposed to water as it can weaken the fibres, causing them to become brittle. To clean wicker, dilute a light detergent into water and apply to the affected areas with a microfibre cloth, ensuring it has been wringed as dry as possible. Stainless steel cleaners and multipurpose cleaners can be used on metal furniture to remove any dirt and rejuvenate its shine.
DUSTING
Dusting furniture removes a filmy layer of airborne deposits that build up on surfaces, which can scratch finishes and affect the longevity of furniture. Microfibre cloths feature non-abrasive fibres that remove dust without damaging surfaces. Plastic furniture can gain a static cling when some abrasive cloths are used to dust them, making the plastic attract dust like a magnet, therefore it is advisable that you use a microfibre cloth to dust and wipe down any plastic surfaces. You can also use a vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment to remove dust and debris from any material furniture.
POLISHING
Microfibre cloths can also be used when polishing furniture with or without a wood or metal polish. Wood polish is designed to preserve indoor wooden catering furniture, such as tables and chairs by covering the furniture with a protective layer that helps to increase the durability of the finish. Teak oil should be liberally applied to wooden outdoor furniture to ensure it is able to withstand the effects of weather - always check the teak oil you are using as some contain colorants than can stain wood. Peek Metal Polish is designed for use on a wide range of materials, including, but not limited to, copper, stainless steel, chrome and fibreglass, leaving them with a beautiful shine and high quality finish.
PREVENTION
Preventing your furniture from becoming damaged by reducing its exposure to weather or unnecessary use is the best way to ensure your chairs, tables and stools last. If your outside dining areas or seating areas are quiet during certain times of the week or year, consider keeping your furniture in storage in a warm and dry area. Use chair covers for outdoor chairs if you don’t have space to store them inside. This reduces the chance that metal furniture will rust or wooden furniture will rot.
