Outdoors

Outdoor Furniture

Furnishing your outdoor areas will not only add value to your establishment but will also keep seats filled and make use of underused space. When selecting your outdoor furniture, it’s also important to allow extra room for chairs when they are pulled out and space for your guests to leave the table comfortably.

When the weather turns colder, it is advisable to store your furniture away to protect it from the elements of nature. Consider where and how you will store your furniture, if it can be stacked or folded.

Covers are also a good way of protecting your furniture and prolonging its life. Another important factor is the flooring, as you should consider if your patio is strong enough to hold the furniture and guests, and what damage could be done by chairs or tables scraping across it.

Patio furniture is commonly designed with high resistance to moisture and the effects of the sun. In this way, investing in high quality outdoor furniture brings many financial rewards. You can achieve a striking outdoor setting with sturdy, robust furniture which is built to last through all weather conditions and requires little or no maintenance. You can also benefit from investing in foldable and stackable furniture as this will save valuable storage space and allow you to cater for extra numbers.

Folding furniture

Folding furniture is one of the best ways to save space in your establishment and allow room for extra guests at short notice. Foldable furniture is ideal for outdoor events as it is space-saving, highly durable and flexible. Folding tables are also designed to support heavy objects, including machines and tableware so can be set up for a wide range of outdoor functions such as banquets, wedding ceremonies and mobile catering events.

The palette ranges from light maple and copper beech through to plaited, woven structures and dark wenge, a deep wood with a dark brown colour which can look purple or even black under ambient lighting. Overall a dynamic and pleasantly natural selection.

Scena Vivo

Select gentle powder tones or make an impact with bold, rich colours. This range of tops allows you to match chairs for a harmonic look, create attractive contrasts or choose a different colour for each table.

Scena Arte

TIP: Werzalit recommends lighter decors for tables which are exposed to significant levels of sunlight, as darker colours have a tendancy to fade slightly over time.

Styles and materials

Wood

Wood Furniture

One of the many benefits of wooden furniture is that each piece offers a unique appearance, with diverse characteristics in the colour, grain and lifespan. Softwoods such as pine possess outstanding aesthetic qualities, whilst some harder woods like Oak and Ash can provide greater durability.

As wood can be influenced by temperature, you should avoid installing your wooden furniture on under floor heating, especially Oak. It is also affected by air humidity, so if you have a room which is either very dry or very damp, it may be best to consider metal furniture and other materials which are less prone to the effects of air humidity.

Faux wood

Faux Wood Furniture

Faux wood is the perfect choice if you desire an appearance from your furniture which is close to wood, with the benefits of high durability and resilience to moisture.

This is the ideal material for saving costs and ensuring a long life for your furniture with very little need for maintenance, whilst still creating a warm feel that you would expect from natural wood. Both real and artificial woods will pick up accents in furniture and enhance your decor.

This material, unlike authentic wood is also able to resist rotting, cracking and insect infestations, making it a convenient and practical option.

Metal

Metal Furniture

Metal provides a contemporary look and feel to furniture, whilst benefitting from high resistance to pressures like heat and chemical stress. Metal is far more resilient to everyday wear and tear than other materials and if cared for can last a lifetime.

Metal is also flame resistant, making it less dangerous and one of the reasons why it is used frequently in schools, busy kitchens, cafeterias and dining halls.

As a material, metal is also good value for money, even with higher prices for certain items of furniture it is expected to last 10-15 years, and so the replacement cycle is less frequent.

Plastic

Plastic Furniture

Plastic furniture, whilst comfortable and stylish, is on the whole less expensive than other materials and offers great value for money. It is also lightweight material so can be moved around easily, ideal for cafés and bistros when the chairs need to be carried inside before closing time.

With waterproof qualities, plastic furniture can also be left unattended in rain without any risk of rusting or cracking of the material. However, care must be taken if your plastic furniture is placed in direct sunlight to avoid warping. Plastic also tends not to break when dropped or mishandled and requires little or no maintenance costs.

For instance, our folding tables benefit from a polyethylene top with steel legs and frame. The top offers great impact resistance whilst the legs and frame make it incredibly sturdy.

Rattan and wicker

Rattan and Wicker Furniture

Modern rattan effect furniture provides a traditional look but without the risk of damage, excess moisture, or ripped clothing. It also very lightweight, making it easy to carry and to clean. With great weather resistance, rattan furniture is suitable for keeping outdoors in winter.

Wicker itself is made from a vine called rattan which grows naturally in a warm, dry climate. Therefore, it is naturally tough but becomes soft under extreme heat pressure. Its earthy, natural appearance is best suited to outdoor spaces, and is also a good option for environmentally-conscious owners.

Once established in a patio or pavement setting, wicker furniture is relatively easy to maintain. Although naturally resistant to weather, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight and rain is best practice to keep it looking at its best.

Caring for your furniture

Some wooden furniture may require treatment with oils or stains each year to protect it. If treated regularly, wooden furniture should be safe to keep outdoors over the winter. We still recommend that you store any items indoors if possible or use a cover.

To maintain the appearance of your brand new furniture, it should be treated with a good quality oil or suitable exterior finish, but in doing this, it is vital to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Please note that applying teak oil to furniture which has not been cleaned will result in darkening and eventually blackening of the item.

If left untreated, furniture will be influenced by natural weathering, producing a silvery grey colour. Small cracks may appear on the end grain and slightly less so on the surface. This will not affect the strength and durability of the material. In hot, dry conditions some cracks may appear larger, but these will reduce in cooler, more humid conditions.

Hot items such as irons, coffee mugs and steaming tureens or soup pots can melt away the finish of a table. Water from spills and condensation from cases or cold drink glasses can damage and deface coatings through a process known as ‘blooming’ which is an effect which makes transparent coatings turn a milky white colour. Damage can be far more severe if the liquid itself stains the surface, such as ink, tea or coffee.

Alcoholic drinks, perfumes and organic solvents can behave as paint stripper and remove many types of coating. A simple way to avoid some of these problems is to use coasters and oversized ashtrays.

TIP: With most woods, loose dust on the surface can be removed with a soft lint-free cloth used gently. Cloth fibres can catch and tear away pieces of the finish, veneer or loose parts.

Soft woods

All soft woods will need treatment at some stage, so it is strongly advised that you check that your furniture has been pre-treated or provide treatment immediately after the purchase. For example, pine furniture would normally be dipped in a preservative oil to prevent cracking and to withstand the rain. If the wood appears dry, this could be a sign that it needs treating with a clear wood preserver. Naturally always ensure that your outdoor furniture is dry and clean, free of any dirt, dust or grease before applying treatment. It is also easy to forget to treat the base of each leg of tables and chairs to prevent water absorption. Post treatment can result in a variation of colour, which is perfectly normal and not cause for concern.

Hard woods

Teak is a tropical hardwood, commonly used in garden furniture for its high durability. Both Teak and Iroko have been classes by the UK Timber research and Development Association as ‘very durable’, which is the highest rating available. Resistance to decay with both these hard woods is estimated at over 25 years, and so by following the supplier’s instructions for care and maintenance, your hard wood furniture should last a considerably long time.

Metal

Metal is commonly used in outdoor furniture, with cast and wrought iron being the most popular materials. As aluminium is resistant to weather conditions and heavy impact, only a soapy water wash is required to clean it and restore the look. High pressure jet washing should be avoided as this could damage the powder coating, and also ensure your items are dried out thoroughly to avoid streaking and water marks. Most metal furniture can be left outdoors, but check whether your furniture offers rust protection, as it may require regular anti-rust treatment.

Rattan, wicker and woven furniture

Any furniture which is made from rattan, cane, willow or bamboo is not intended for permanent outdoor use, and should be carried inside at the close of the day. Weather resistance will depend on the construction and the materials used. This furniture is usually lightweight and easily portable. Any cushions should be removed if the furniture is left outside, especially during the winter months.
